Crushed Concrete Delivery in Covington, LA

Crushed Concrete · Covington, LA

Recycled crushed concrete base by the truckload

Crushed concrete delivery brings recycled base material to your job by the dump truck load. W2 Commercial Construction produces recycled crushed concrete and delivers it in our own dump trucks. It goes under a gravel driveway, a slab, a pad or a culvert pipe as a compacted base. Farm lanes, parking and equipment areas, trench backfill and bulk fill take it too.

Tell the team the area, depth and use, and we match the material to the job. Our bobcat service, track loader and dozer can spread each load where it goes. W2 is a Louisiana State Licensed Contractor, LA State Lic# 78829, and fully insured. We bring 20+ years on Northshore ground, and estimates are free.

What is recycled crushed concrete?

Recycled crushed concrete is old concrete broken back down into base material. The Federal Highway Administration calls it reclaimed concrete material, sometimes referred to as crushed concrete. Old concrete is mostly aggregate to begin with. The stone and sand in the mix make up about 60 to 75 percent of its volume.

Per FHWA, a jaw crusher breaks up the rubble and magnets pull out the steel. The rest is crushed and screened to size. Because every piece is crushed and angular, the material locks up in a base. We produce recycled crushed concrete, and the team matches the material to the job.

Why does crushed concrete make sense on the Northshore?

USGS reports that Louisiana imports almost all of its aggregate and mines very little stone. Most of it comes by barge from Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri, or by freighter from Mexico. The Louisiana Transportation Research Center says the state lacks high quality natural stone. That keeps the state transportation department looking for alternatives to crushed stone in road base.

Covington averages 62.51 inches of rain a year, and Abita soils on St. Tammany terraces drain slowly. From December through April, their seasonal high water table sits 1 to 3 feet down. FHWA says crushed concrete gives good load transfer when placed on a weaker subgrade. That helps under farm lanes and under commercial parking lots, part of our site preparation work.

How does crushed concrete hold up as a base?

FHWA reports California Bearing Ratio values of 90 to more than 140 for crushed concrete base. That bearing strength is comparable to crushed limestone. In a 2004 FHWA review, Texas DOT said the base knits together and bears more load as it recements. Texas, Minnesota and California reported recycled concrete performing better than virgin aggregate as a base.

Coarse crushed concrete carries fewer fines, so it drains freely and is more permeable than conventional granular base. It also weighs less per compacted yard than mineral aggregate, so a ton covers more ground. HomeGuide says recycled concrete aggregate lasts as long as natural stone. Our crushed concrete vs limestone guide sets the 2 side by side for a Louisiana driveway.

What should you know before you order crushed concrete?

Crushed concrete is strongly alkaline, and in water its pH often tops 11. FHWA says that can corrode aluminum or galvanized steel pipe in direct contact with the wet material. Keep it off bare aluminum or galvanized pipe. In the St. Tammany Parish right of way, a metal driveway culvert already has to be bituminous coated.

Ask for clean crushed concrete, since asphalt coated pieces weaken it. Past 20 to 25 percent of the mix, bearing strength drops below a natural aggregate base. Compact it wet so the fines work through, and do not overwork it, which separates the coarse and fine pieces. Placing and compacting a load is part of our grading and dirt work.

Is crushed concrete as good as limestone for a base?
For a base layer, the published numbers compare well. FHWA reports a California Bearing Ratio of 90 to more than 140 for crushed concrete base, comparable to crushed limestone. Texas, Minnesota and California reported recycled concrete doing better than virgin aggregate as a base. Keep it away from bare aluminum or galvanized pipe, where its alkaline water can corrode the metal.
What does crushed concrete cost?
HomeGuide's national guide puts crushed concrete at $11 to $53 per ton, or $16 to $75 per cubic yard. The same guide lists crushed limestone at $30 to $38 per ton. It counts crushed concrete among the cheapest stones by the yard. Those are national figures. We quote crushed concrete delivery by the load after we hear about the job.
How much crushed concrete do I need for a driveway?
Multiply length by width by depth, then divide the cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards. A 10 by 100 foot driveway base 4 inches deep is about 333 cubic feet, or about 12.3 cubic yards. At 6 inches deep it takes about 18.5 cubic yards. HomeGuide says a 10 wheel dump truck carries 12 to 20 tons of gravel, or around 8 to 10 yards.
Can crushed concrete go under a slab or house pad?
Yes. Louisiana's residential code, the 2021 IRC, calls for a 4 inch base course where a slab sits below grade. It goes on the prepared subgrade, and crushed concrete passing a 2 inch sieve is among the listed materials. No base course is required on well drained or sand and gravel mixture soils. Confirm your lot and plans with the parish, and see our house pad page for the dirt work.
Can crushed concrete go under a driveway culvert?
Yes. St. Tammany Parish asks you to state the base material and depth under a culvert in its right of way. It prefers 6 inches of crushed stone or crushed concrete. The pipe must be an LADOTD approved type, and a metal pipe must be bituminous coated. A city such as Covington has its own right of way permit. Our driveway culvert installation page covers the rest.
Is crushed concrete safe near a pond or creek?
FHWA reports no apparent environmental problems with water that drains through crushed concrete. That water is alkaline, though, since crushed concrete in water often tops pH 11. For that reason, some jurisdictions keep stockpiles a minimum distance from water courses. Keep stockpiles and the base back from a pond or creek, and confirm any setback for your lot with the parish.
Do you deliver crushed concrete near me?
We deliver across the Northshore and Greater New Orleans from our base in Covington. In St. Tammany Parish, that covers Mandeville, Madisonville, Abita Springs, Lacombe, Slidell, Pearl River and Folsom. Hammond and Ponchatoula in Tangipahoa Parish get loads too, along with Metairie, Kenner and New Orleans. For clay, topsoil or sand instead, see our fill dirt delivery page.
